Opera House
The State Orchestra of Athens, Orchestra in Residence of the Athens Concert Hall, presents Tuesday, April 30 at 8:30 p.m. the magnificent St. Matthew Passion of Johann Sebastian Bach, through a visual approach, which enhances the multidimensional reception and metaphysical atmosphere of the work, making its insurmountable musical meanings more tangible, more dramatic, perhaps even more timely.
The masterpiece oratorio (1727) of the great Cantor of Leipzig is considered one of the most important compositions of Baroque church music. It includes deeply moving arias and evocative chorales. It was written for soloists, double choir and double orchestra, to a libretto by the German poet Picander, based mainly on chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew of the Lutheran Bible, as well as the Song of Songs.
The solo vocal parts are performed by tenor David Fisher, basso-baritone Podrick Rowan, soprano Fani Antonelou, contralto Henriette Guede, tenor Vassilis Kavaias and bassist Petros Magoulas. On the podium, Michalis Zeke. The Athens Municipality Choir (teaching – director: Stavros Beris) and the Rosarte Children’s Choir (teaching – director: Rozi Mastrosavva) are taking part. Panagis Pagoulatos has taken over the artistic supervision and Alexandros Zampetas has designed the video projections. Lighting is supervised by Kostas Bethanis. The presentation of JS Bach’s masterpiece oratorio in the Christos Lambrakis Hall is accompanied by Greek surtitles, is part of the popular cycle of events Adagio – Music for the Easter days and is a co-production of KOA and Megaros. Before the start of the concert, a free introductory speech by Charalambos Gogios is scheduled (19:30) for ticket holders.

Lyrical Worship Music Festival
In many places in Athens, the 2nd Worship Music Festival is being held by the Ministry of Culture, the National Opera and Eurolife FFH which started yesterday and continues tonight and tomorrow, under the artistic direction of Giorgos Koumentakis.
Tomorrow Shrove Tuesday, as part of the Festival, you can watch the opera Papissa Joanna by Giorgos Vassilantonakis at the Alternative Stage of the National Opera at 19.00 in a concert presentation for the first time. The current version renegotiates the material of the opera in new temporal, dramatic and orchestral dimensions, adapting it to a chamber suite in oratorio form, while retaining the main characters and dramatic content of the original work.
Libretto: Vangelis Hatzigiannidis, based on the novel of the same name by Emmanuel Roidis. Musical direction: Michalis Papapetrou. With: Chrysa Maliamani, treble, Margarita Sygeniotou, mezzo, Yiannis Christopoulos, tenor, Dionysis Sourbis, baritone. With the ERT Choir.
Also on the Alternative Stage of the Greek Orthodox Church tomorrow, Holy Tuesday, at 21:30 you can watch the concert “The nostalgia of God”, with works by Filippos Tsalachouris. Much of the work of Philippos Tsalachouris belongs to the category of devotional music. The composer himself places “absorption”, “deep spiritual contemplation” and “the silence of the Word” as key elements of his music. The title refers to the writer Dimitrios Kapetanakis, offering a strong starting point of associations for the listener who will watch, hear and see the musico-dramatic works that make up the concert program. A common element of all of them are names-symbols, such as David, Rachel or Lazarus.
Music direction, teaching, dramaturgy: Filippos Tsalachouris. Electronics, sound environment: Konstantinos Evaggelidis. Participating baritones: Villy Kyriakopoulou, Marialena Politi treble, Anastasia Eudaimon mezzo, Paris Dimatsas, Nikos Masourakis.
