2023-04-25 11:15:01

Friday, April 28, 2023 (7 p.m.)Frédéric Chaslin will lead Symphony no. 1 of SERGEI RACHMANINOVinterpreted by NATIONAL RADIO ORCHESTRA. The fate of the work is unique and marked by the tumultuous history of Russia: the premiere of the work (in Saint Petersburg, in 1897) did not enjoy great success, deepening a deep depression of the composer. When he had to leave Russia (in 1917) and go into exile to America (because of the political persecutions that followed the Bolshevik Revolution), the composer did not take the score with him. After his death, however, in 1944, the score was rediscovered in the archives of the Petersburg Conservatory Library, and a new life for the work was born from here. The American premiere took place in 1948, performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra – conducted by Eugene Ormandy – and gradually the work was performed around the world, enjoying a belated success.

The concert at Sala Radio will also be an opportunity to see the cellist once more RAZVAN SUMAone of the most active Romanian musicians, soloist of Radio Orchestras and Choirs, founder of the Ensemble PlaCelloartistic director of the first cello festival in Romania – CellEAST – and of the project ICon Arts Transilvania. He will interpret SCHUMANN: Concerto in A minor for cello and orchestra. Like Rachmaninov’s symphony, the work had an unexpected story: conceived in just 2 weeks, it was never performed during the composer’s lifetime, who had received some negative criticism of his score. But today the concerto is considered one of the 3 great romantic cello concertos, along with those by Dvořák and Elgar.

The evening at Sala Radio will open with MOZART: Overture of the opera The mercy of Tito.
