High culture meets sophisticated and, above all, extensive independent festival? With the “Desertshore Festival”, the Volkstheater has shown how excellently this works!

concerts in the folk theater? I knew that. But a complete festival of contemporary and, above all, sophisticated (pop) music in the folk theater? that was new to me. and that’s exactly why I had to go to the opening day on “desertshore festival“, a two-day spectacle on all stages in the Volkstheater.

Admittedly, it was all a bit new for me. I hadn’t often gotten lost in the Volkstheater, so it was even more exciting for me to explore the whole building. After a short walk through the rooms that were immediately apparent, we went to the red bar. A talk was supposed to take place there with the title “the underrated hall of fame: failing better„.

At the same time I wanted to organize a drink, but even before the whole program started the queue at the bar in the red bar was already a bit long. I and my colleagues first sat down, listened briefly to the protagonists on stage and then decided to go to the next bar in another room to quench our thirst.

At this point we were not yet aware that the topic of fluid intake would haunt us throughout the evening. Well – we stood at the other bar, which was lit with different visuals, waited for our drinks and admired a bit of art in the meantime. Waiting for a drink has actually never been nicer!

When the drinks were in our hands, we talked and enjoyed our drinks… until we were informed at some point that we were not allowed into the large hall with the drinks. boom, the enjoyment was gone. We had to hurry, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to see the actual concerts start in time. From this point onwards the comfort was gone – from this point onwards we had to plan.

We briefly went to the “dark room” where it was actually really, really dark. we watched “discovery zone presents cybernetica”, at least part of it. It was mainly multimedia art and we were a little nervous because of the big concerts in the large hall. So we quietly sneaked out once more during the performance; following all, we wanted to see everything!

and then we were finally in the large hall and “long length“ entered the large theater stage a few moments later. Dressed entirely in black and equipped with a synthesizer, the duo treated us to a dark form of disco-pop, with clear tendencies towards post-punk. Immersed in pink and blue stage lights, the performance seemed cool and somewhat harsh. But that didn’t matter, it fit well with this formation!

Even more than the music, I celebrated the singer, who really gave her all: she danced and she literally contorted herself. That made the performance exciting because you never knew what moves she would show us next.

In any case, following this concert I was very motivated until I remembered the drinks situation once more. We scurried out and saw a long line at the bar. Even in the red bar you might only dream of getting a quick drink. So we scurried to the smoking terrace, which was just as crowded, and resigned ourselves. No more drinks for us that evening, drinking doesn’t fit into the schedule.

We were thirsty, but we didn’t want to wait in line at the bar forever. Instead, sitting was actually better anyway and so we went back to the large hall. There we were also provided with very good music: “Annika Henderson“ and her fellow musicians delighted us with very fine indie pieces and, above all, the singer’s voice was so gentle and lovely that it almost seemed a bit like a massage for the brain.

After the concert, deeply relaxed, we ventured out into the hallways to try our luck at the bar once more. vain. So we went back into the hall – we just chatted until the next and final concert began. and pushed away our dry throats.

I was really looking forward to the performance of “zola jesus“And I wasn’t disappointed either. At first she sang classical pieces accompanied by string players, which irritated me a bit – but when she was in such walls, she wanted to perform accordingly, she said. A little later she filled the room with great pop music and wonderful movements.

She stood on the stage like a goddess and took our breath away. We sat there very reverently and listened to this artist, who probably captivated everyone simply because of her presence. Again and once more she presented many facets of her singing voice, which she later even accompanied in a very reduced form with her piano skills.

After the performance of “Zola Jesus” there were DJ sets and probably a lot more program. But I didn’t notice any of that anymore – I was thirsty and was also invited to a birthday party (a win-win situation in this case). Nevertheless, I was very happy to have been there at the first edition of the “Desertshore Festival” – it was great to finally see all the rooms of the Volkstheater, to discover so much music and art and to be able to experience it in such a great setting as a festival . And: with a little planning, the bar problem can definitely be solved (e.g. just take someone with you who will always be in line!).

ps: die Second edition of the desertshore festival will take place from 0912 – 12/10/2023 – you can find all the information here!
