“Hollow Coves” are actually known for background music, but they still made an unexpectedly good appearance in Simm City!

I made the pilgrimage to Simm City that Thursday evening probably for the same reason as many others: namely because of the Instagram/tiktok hit “Coastline” by “Hollow Coves”. It feels like everyone has used the song as background music for beach scenes and that’s why I wanted to know which band was behind it. said and done. As always, I didn’t find Simm City to be the most suitable location for this event, but the main thing is that the group found its way to Vienna!

Before we started with “hollow coves”, we enjoyed “garrett kato“, a Canadian who moved to Australia to make street music and is now on real stages. He performed his quiet, sad songs all alone with the guitar and of course the audience had nothing better to do than chat. Of course, the artist himself also noticed this and for one song he asked the audience to briefly stop talking. That actually worked, but only for one song. Overall his appearance was quite nice, it was definitely worth being there earlier.

hollow coves“, a duo from Australia, stormed the stage with their band while they were bathed in circling spotlights. In general, the lighting concept was very unique: the group was sometimes illuminated from the side and below rather than from above and somehow that was slanted. It gave me the impression that the lighting technician was high on caffeine and over-motivated and that “creating a beautiful lighting atmosphere” wasn’t necessarily in his repertoire. but what do I know? In any case, the band really came up trumps with the second song: they played the hit “The Woods” and a big cheer went through the ranks. I was also pleasantly surprised – I was kind of expecting a boring set, but very soon they convinced me that they had thought through their setlist very well. Maybe it put me off because Ryan Henderson was on the keyboard at the beginning, but soon he stood up and switched to guitar and dance moves! initially timidly, but over time they wiggled their butts a little more.

Speaking of dance moves: especially the crazy bassist with wide pants and caps really had it in terms of dance technique. Sometimes he even stole the show a bit with his movements, but that’s just my opinion. And while we’re on the subject of movement: if you can move to music, that probably means that it doesn’t just consist of Instagram/tiktok ballads! In fact, “Hollow Coves” surprised me a bit in this respect – I was expecting one folk ballad following another, but they also boasted poppier and sometimes even country-like songs. a little faster, a little more danceable and always with fast moving light. I was really excited by “Harder to Fake It”, but maybe also because there was a young lady dancing right in front of me who really felt the song. song love is contagious! The melancholic mood during the song “Evermore” was also contagious – singer Matt Carins sat on a bar stool all alone on the stage (or at least there was no one else to be seen) and this time performed in his very beautiful, yellow-orange lighting mood. I found that very nice.

and then came the wild, interactive part! During “Photographs” the audience was asked to sing along, during “The Open Road” everyone clapped along to the beat and during “Anew” everyone fell to the ground and then jumped up once more full of ecstasy and danced with the band. that was impressive. and then the encore block came with the hit “coastline” – and it actually went down a bit. All the other songs were little bangers, but “Coastline” actually didn’t seem as anthemic, more for quiet moments. In that heated, euphoric mood, this encore was one for filming with your cell phone, because you mightn’t dance to it. The concert was properly celebrated and concluded with the even more rousing anthem “Milk & Honey”. My concerns that the performance might be boring were already gone right from the start – it was a thoroughly beautiful, galloping folk-indie-pop-country concert, with many highlights that I wouldn’t have expected.
