MIAMI — The Dominican’s season Sandy Alcantarathe National League Cy Young winner, came to an abrupt end due to the latest setback in his recovery and has raised concerns regarding whether he will be able to pitch next season for the Miami Marlins.
The Marlins ace experienced a stiffness in the forearm in an appearance by Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday. Alcántara was rehabbing a forearm flexor strain that left him on the injured list since September 6. He hoped to return to the team fighting for a wild card.
“Very frustrating for me, a person who likes to compete,” Alcántara told reporters before the Marlins’ game once morest the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. “I feel bad for the fans, my family, my son, my friends because I won’t be there this year. I’ll try to be ready next year. Stay positive.”
Alcantara intends to meet with team general manager Kim Ng, manager Skip Schumaker and his agent in the coming days to evaluate next steps.
“We will have a conversation to make the necessary decisions,” Alcántara warned. “We have to decide if there will be an operation or not, I don’t know. We have to get together”.
Alcantara completed four scoreless innings in his rehab start. His emergence with Jacksonville came following a painless throwing program and bullpen sessions.
Alcántara, 28, went 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA, leading the major leagues in innings (228 2/3) and complete games (3) to become the Marlins’ first Cy Young winner in 2022. This season he struggled and finished 7-12, with a 4.14 ERA. The illness appeared on September 3 in Washington and for the first time in his career he missed games due to an arm injury.
