Beckenbauer was absent from the big world champion meeting
At the beginning of July, the world champions from 1990 all came together in the luxury hotel “Das Achental” in Grassau am Chiemsee (Bavaria), 33 years after the great triumph.
But the most important person was missing: Beckenbauer, the team manager who outshone everything at the time, was unable to take part.
His wife Heidi said when he was welcomed: “Unfortunately, Franz cannot be there for health reasons. It would just be too much for him.”
In an interview with the magazine “Bunte” last year, Beckenbauer explained: “I had a so-called eye attack in one eye. Unfortunately I can’t see anything on the right. I can handle that. And I have to be careful with my heart.”
