Do the works on the northern metro threaten the stability of the Schaerbeek town hall? The royal commission on monuments and sites is concerned regarding this. And fears a scenario like that of the Palais Du Midi. According to a document released by RTBF this morning, the commission expresses fears regarding the stability of assets within the project perimeter. Including the community house
A municipal hotel which is a listed Flemish neo-renaissance style building. A jewel of Brussels heritage dating from 1887 for its oldest parts. As is Place Colignon on which it is located. It is under this site that the excavators will come into action at a depth of 30m, to drill a tunnel reserved for metro trains. One of the seven stations of the extension of metro line 3 to Evere is to be built there. A 4 and a half km route which joins Albert to Bordet via the new Toots Thielemans station.
This opinion from the commission follows the submission of a second permit request for the extension of the metro.
The Royal Commission on Monuments and Sites expresses fears regarding the stability of the buildings located on the perimeter of the project, including the Schaerbeek municipal hotel. A concern also expressed for the case of the Palais du Midi. Recent events have proven him right. The marshy ground of the Senne did not allow the drilling of the 120 meter tunnel under the palace. Finally, the Palais du Midi will be dismantled from the inside to pass the cranes through the roof and dig the tunnel.
To avoid the same scenario at Place Colignon, the Commission asks that all necessary precautions be taken to ensure that the Schaerbeek municipal hall is maintained in perfect condition. More technically, it requires the installation of witnesses or sensors in the building and calls for the carrying out of a real heritage study.
The municipality is keen to obtain monitoring to guarantee the stability of the municipal hotel by keeping it accessible and in operation during the work.
The project owner Beliris wants to be reassuring and reminds us that the town hall at Place de Colignon is not built on the Senne valley as is the case with the Palais du Midi. Inventories before, during and following work are also planned for all buildings on the square thanks to permanent monitoring of movements via a principle of sensors on the municipal hotel as well as on neighboring buildings.
