Parents stated that their children became addicted to Fortnite and, as a result of excessive passion for the game, stopped eating, sleeping and bathing. According to the guardians, Epic Games deliberately designed Fortnite to be highly addictive.

Judge Sylvain Lussier (Sylvain Lussier) agreed that the case is serious, called the lawsuit not “frivolous or manifestly unfounded” and reminded: “The harmful effects of tobacco were not recognized overnight”.

Lussier ruled that Quebecers experiencing symptoms of addiction after playing Fortnite since September 1, 2017 can join the lawsuit, but disagreed with the accusation against Epic Games.

“The court finds that there is no evidence of the deliberate creation of an addictive game. But that doesn’t rule out the possibility that the game is indeed addictive and the developer/publisher might know about it.”Lussier decided.

Epic Games in the comments BBC stated that she would defend her case in court: parents have the opportunity to control the time spent by their child in the game and the purchases made. The studio considers the lawsuit unfounded.

Fortnite attracts over 80 million monthly active players. In early December, the project received massive content updatewhich marked the start of the first season of the fourth chapter and the transfer of the game to Unreal Engine 5.1.
