Masturbation is a natural behavior and beneficial in many ways. However, it can also become harmful if it is compulsive. It then often results from hypersexuality, with negative consequences.

Masturbation is considered compulsive when the individual indulges in it between 5 and 15 times a day, or even more. It is often associated with an addiction to anonymous or paid forms of sexual desire such as prostitution, pornography, telephone or Internet sex, or cybersex. But also to drugs used in the search for sexual pleasure.

All of these behaviors constitute hypersexuality, the frequency of which affects between 3 and 6% of the general population. Essentially male, this behavior generally begins in adolescence. “Most published studies emphasize the frequent comorbidity of hypersexuality with anxiety-depressive disorders (half or two-thirds of subjects depending on the study) and addictive behaviors (especially alcohol). Personality disorders of all types are also common,” indicates an article in Quotidien du Médecin on this subject.

This behavior has many harmful consequences for the physical and mental health of the person who is the victim. First of all, compulsive and therefore very frequent masturbation poses a risk in terms of injury to the external genitalia. Additionally, being overwhelmed by sexual fantasies and erotic impulses can lead to inappropriate and even potentially criminal behaviors, such as sexual assault and rape.

When compulsive masturbation and associated addictions become so widespread in a person’s life, they can also have consequences on their professional life, on their friendly and family relationships and on their life in general. Without beneficial support, this behavior can have a lasting impact on self-confidence. Appropriate treatment can make it possible to learn to control the compulsive aspect of masturbation and hypersexuality in general.

Treatment often consists of cognitive-behavioral therapy, sometimes combined with medications targeting, for example, mood disorders, such as antidepressants.
