Comprehensive Data on Euthanasia of Animals in Wallonia and Brussels: Statistics, Reasons, and Solutions

Euthanasia of animals is not uncommon in Wallonia and Brussels, but the data is incomplete concerning individuals wishing, most often, to shorten the suffering of their pet, even if behavior can also be a reason invoked.

Among the figures available in Belgium, those compiled by shelters show some of the euthanasia performed each year. Thus, in 2021, the Walloon shelters had to euthanize 243 dogs, which represents 3% of the dogs that left the establishments that year.

The reason is not necessarily indicated by the shelters but includes various reasons: animal sick, unweaned, too little socialized, lack of space in the shelter, etc.

Many more cats have gone through a shelter and the figure for euthanasia of felines is therefore much higher: 2,262, which represents 13% of the total “exits” recorded. Then there are other animals, such as birds, and sometimes more exotic ones such as reptiles.

In Brussels, the relationship is much the same between dogs and cats, but it is the birds that have been most often euthanized. However, felines remain by far the most collected animals by the capital’s shelters (3360, once morest 1095 birds).

Interesting figure available in Brussels, the reason for euthanasia is specified by the shelters and reveals that the animal’s disease guided this decision in 99% of cases, the rest being linked to behavioral problems.

About 12% of animals that went through a Brussels shelter in 2021 left the statistics following euthanasia, the vast majority (69%) leaving the place of reception following an adoption. A figure close to those of Wallonia, where 67% of dogs leaving the shelter did so following adoption, 75% for cats.
