Atopic triad
The dermatologist, Dr. Eneida de la Torre, explained the diagnostic criteria that must be taken into account from the consultation with the primary doctor, to detect the atopic dermatitis and refer the patient to the dermatologist. Likewise, he mentioned that this condition is generally related to other disorders such as asthma and allergic rhinitis.
“50 to 80% of patients, from childhood, get bronchiolitis, they will be at risk of developing asthma and will have a history of nasal allergies,” he explained. “Up to 30% of patients have food allergies.”
Stress and Atopic Dermatitis
According to Dr. Coralia Maldonado, psychologist, patients with the condition remain in a state of constant tension and alert, which generates discomfort on a psychological and/or emotional level, altering the normal functioning of the systems that are interrelated to the furwhich results in an increase in skin inflammation that causes itching and worsens scratching.
“Stress has a component that generates defense mechanisms at an internal level, which generate cortisol and cortisol also favors inflammation of the fur”he explained. “If I don’t take care of my furit affected my thinking, my thinking affects the emotional area and from there to other areas.”
Balanced nutrition and skin health
On the other hand, Lcda. Juliette Elmusa, nutritionist, reflected on the objectives of nutritional management of atopic dermatitispointing out the importance of recognizing potential allergens that can exacerbate the symptoms of the condition in patients, as well as the function of each food and its contribution to the correct performance of the body.
“Balanced nutrition is proportional to the essential nutrients that the body needs,” he emphasized. “In nutrition we never seek to eliminate, we seek to add nutritional density and this is where comprehensive health comes in.”
Physical and neuronal effect of physical activity during the treatment of Atopic Dermatitis
Exercise not only benefits cardiovascular health and blood circulation, but is also essential for generating hormonal balance. In fact, a close relationship has been established between the hormonal part and outbreaks of atopic dermatitis.
Jahdiel Rosado, personal trainer, also explained that weight control, good sleep habits and muscle and bone strengthening are fundamental pillars to maintain a healthy life, not only for patients with Atopic Dermatitisbut for the population in general.
Patient Rights and Responsibilities
Law 194 of 2000 establishes, mainly, the Letter of Rights and Responsibilities of patients, a format that, according to Atty. Evelyn Esquilín, health educator at the Office of the Patient Advocate, this entity aims to fully enforce the precepts contained in this document, but it is necessary for citizens to know them.
“If the doctor gives you instructions, if you do not comply with them, your responsibility is left behind and it is difficult to claim a right if we are not responsible,” he stated.
