On the Porte de la Chapelle Arena site, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, the workers have recently embarked on a new stage in the development of the future 8,000-seat enclosure, with the progressive assembly of the framework metal above the main building.
An the beginning of 2024, the Porte de la Chapelle Arena – whose post-Games name will be Adidas Arena named following the famous German equipment manufacturer – will officially complete the Parisian system of large halls, settling in a hitherto unoccupied slothalfway between theAccor Arena de Bercy (12th) and its potential 20,000 seats, and the Stade Pierre de Coubertin (16th) and its 4,000 seats.
But before welcoming its first spectators, in particular in view of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games during which it will successively host the badminton and rhythmic gymnastics events, then the para-badminton and para-powerlifting (weightlifting ), the enclosure of the North-East of Paris rises for the hour each week more in the urban landscape of the capital.
Thus, over the past months, the site has reached several important milestones, with in particular the construction of the low-carbon concrete walls of the cylindrical shaft 17 meters high encircling the main room.
The first spans of bleachers were also laid, as well as the installation of the first elements of the wooden floor in what will eventually constitute the building where the two annexed gymnasiums will be arranged, devoted, in superposition, to the reception of schools, clubs and associations, technical offices, as well as spaces intended for the media.
With the completion of the structural work, a new stage might begin between the end of 2022 and the start of 2023.
In fact, the gradual laying of the 850-ton metal frame is now one of the new technical and logistical challenges for some of the 300 workers mobilized to date on the site.
The elements of this imposing structure will thus be assembled block by block, before being placed above the future arena. A first beam has also recently been installed.
In parallel with this essential achievement, 450 prefabricated bleachers will also be placed within the building using a mobile crane, while on the side of the adjacent building, the workers will be responsible for installing a wooden frame above. above the future main gymnasium.
Although less colossal than its steel neighbor, this wooden structure will still consist of 7 beams of 4 tons each, for 24 meters span and 1.6 meters thick.
This development will precede the forthcoming installation – during the month of February – of the bleachers which will ensure in fine in the gymnasium a gauge of 750 places.

If a delay in the final delivery of the site of 130 million euros might be announced, taking into account the repercussions of the conflict in Ukraine as regards the supply of materials, the actors of the project – Bouygues Building Ile-de-France in the lead, with the assistance of architectural agencies SCAU et NP2F – now intend to complete the work by the end of 2023.
In the meantime, and following the installation of the structural elements, the layout of the interior and exterior spaces will take place over the coming months, with a concern for both acoustic comfort and visual and aesthetic comfort.
The future arena must indeed give pride of place to the principle of sustainability, with energy management carried as a standard, via including the use of geothermal energy.
The Parisian enclosure will also have a green roof, just above an imposing roof-top giving on the district whose urban transformation is also initiated by the City of Paris.
Finally, below, a vast forecourt, also planted, will ensure entry into the building, whose programming will combine sporting events – with the domicile of the Paris Basket – and cultural events with, for the latter, a gauge potentially extendable to 9,000 places.
