Complete Closure of Brussels Ring (R0) for Road Renewal: Traffic Disruption and Diversion Routes

2023-08-09 14:42:11

The Brussels ring (R0) will be completely closed to traffic throughout this weekend in the direction of the capital between the interchange towards Genappe, at Braine-l’Alleud, and that of Groenendael. The road renewal work, which was very degraded, should have started last Friday, but was postponed by a week due to weather conditions. They will finally start this Friday evening, we confirmed on Wednesday at the Sofico.

This project is part of a larger operation to rehabilitate and secure this road axis, from Braine-l’Alleud to the Flemish Region. Initially planned over two weekends, these works finally require three weekends of total closure of traffic in the direction of the capital, the first of which is scheduled for this weekend.

From this Friday, August 11 at 10:00 p.m., the R0 will be completely closed between the “Genappe” and “Groenendael” interchanges until Monday 4:00 a.m. to allow the laying of a new coating. Work will be carried out 24 hours a day.

To reach Brussels, a diversion will be set up from the Haut-Ittre interchange and all the axes converging there (E19, E411, N25, N28, N280, etc.). Users will have to take the West Ring towards Wauthier-Braine. Those who still go to the East Ring to reach a local destination will have to leave the Ring at exit 26 “Genappe”.

The dates and terms of the other two closing weekends will be confirmed later, specifies Sofico.

The total cost of the rehabilitation and security works is estimated at 3 million euros. Some 36,000 vehicles circulate each day in normal times on the portion of the ring concerned.

Second project planned

The renovation of the Vilvoorde viaduct has started and traffic on the Brussels inner ring will be disrupted from August 16. The work will last eight years, until 2031.

1.7 kilometers long and 35 meters high, the viaduct was designed in the 1970s and opened to car traffic in 1978.

Some 150,000 vehicles use it every day. Its structure is now in poor condition and its renovation has therefore become necessary. It concerns the overall structure of the bridge, its load-bearing structure and the interior of the building.

The objective is to maintain traffic on the viaduct as much as possible, with work divided into different phases. During each stage, only part of the bridge will be unavailable and traffic will continue on the other part, with a speed reduced to 50 km/h.

The first phase of the works will take place from August 2023 to the end of 2025, with disruptions on the inner ring and an impact on traffic towards Zaventem.

During the second phase, from spring 2026 to spring 2027, the work area will move in particular to the outer ring. Phases three and four, from spring 2027 to the end of 2030, will cause the greatest nuisance.

Eventually, thanks to the renovation, a fourth lane might be opened in each direction on the viaduct. The cost of the project is estimated at 435 million euros (excluding VAT).
