complaint to the prosecutor –

Luca De Lellis

The complaint has arrived, and there is no shortage of illustrious names. None other than JK Rowling, the writer who invented the iconic Harry Potter saga, and Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X and Tesla. What do they have in common? Both have expressed unfavorable opinions towards the Algerian boxer and Olympic gold medalist Imane Khelif. And, precisely for this reason, they have been sued for cyberbullying along with other people who, according to her Parisian lawyer Nabil Boudi, have contributed to throwing a wave of hatred on his client.

As confirmed by the lawyer to Variety magazine, the accusation was filed on Friday, August 9, at the anti-hate center of the Paris prosecutor’s office. The case was filed against Musk’s social network, formerly Twitter, now “X,” which, under French law, is equivalent to a complaint filed against unknown persons. This, however, “guarantees that the prosecutor’s office has full freedom to investigate all people,” including those who may have written hate messages under a pseudonym, Boudi said in the same interview.

Trump-Musk, stop the whining: it's a lesson in transparency

But let’s recap the story for a moment. Imane Khelif, who in the quarterfinals of the Olympic boxing tournament was the protagonist of the affair that led to the withdrawal of the Italian boxer Angela Carini with all the controversy that we know also flared up in the public debate, produces high levels of testosterone. Ergo, this allows her to unleash greater strength than her colleagues. For this reason, she has been labeled by many as a “man”, therefore favored in her matches against her opponents, despite the fact that the International Olympic Committee has on more than one occasion affirmed the qualifications of the Algerian to compete in the women’s division.

Boxing is engulfed in controversy and power struggle: will it disappear from the Olympics?

And what would JK Rowling and Musk have written to be cited in the complaint? The first, without too many half measures, accused Khelif of being a man who “was enjoying the suffering of a woman he had just hit in the head”. While the entrepreneur, instead, shared a post by swimmer Riley Gaines who stated that “men do not belong in women’s sports”, complete with a signature with an “Absolutely” to accompany it. Now they will answer in court for their statements.
