Complaint about the death of Palestinians in an Israeli prison, after torture

Two imprisoned Gazans, one of whom was a doctor at Al Shifa Hospital, have died in Israeli jails, two Palestinian prisoner rights associations said, claiming they were subjected to “torture” and denied access to medical care.

In their joint statement, the Prisoners’ Club and the Committee for Palestinian Prisoners’ Affairs reported the deaths of Dr. Adnan Ahmed Atiyah al-Bours, 50, who headed Al Shifa’s orthopedic clinic, and Abdel Bari Rajab Hadir, 33.

Both died “after torture and medical crimes suffered by Gaza prisoners,” they added, referring to the lack of care that both Israeli and Palestinian human rights groups have denounced.

The Hamas Health Ministry condemned Dr Burs’ “death (…) by torture”, noting that 492 health workers have been killed since the start of the war.

The Israeli military told AFP it had “not been informed” of the deaths.

Dr Burs was known for his media interviews describing the situation in Gaza Strip hospitals, which were targeted by the Israeli military as they were believed to be used by Hamas as bases. The doctor was arrested “by the occupation army in a hospital in December 2023” and died in Ofer prison in the occupied West Bank on April 19, the two organizations said, noting that his body has not been released to his relatives. Dr Burs had been injured “five months ago”, they added.

Many dignitaries paid tribute to the doctor, including Dr Ghassan Abu Sita, a British-Palestinian surgeon who was in the Gaza Strip when the war broke out. “He was tortured to death by the Israeli army in one of the secret detention camps. He was a wonderful surgeon, full of life,” he wrote on the X platform.

According to the Prisoners’ Club, at least 18 Palestinian prisoners have died since October 7, a number expected to rise “given reports of torture and brutality”.

The Israeli military launched an investigation on December 19, following the deaths of several Palestinians arrested in the Gaza Strip in the previous months.
