Lighting settings
The first criterion to look at is the level of control you have over the actual light. Basic dawn simulators allow you to set your alarm and that’s regarding it. With more expensive models, you can choose the light intensity, for example the Philips Somneo offers 25 intensities, or the duration of the sunrise effect.
Sound settings
The sound settings are not to be neglected and contribute a lot to the personalization of the light. While dawn simulators are meant to naturally revive you with a soft glow, it’s understandable that most users fear falling back to sleep. Therefore, the simulators include an optional audible alarm.
What is important is to consider the different options available to you. Simple alarms might just include a beeping sound, but that type of loud noise is probably what you want to avoid.
Many models offer a range of soothing sound effects (such as birdsong), FM radio… or an AUX input to connect your phone to and wake you up with.
