Comparing Hamas and the Israeli Army: Analysing Raoul Hedebouw’s Controversial Statements

In the program “Le Petit Théâtre de Vrebos” on Thursday October 19 on LN24, Raoul Hedebouw declared that he might only qualify Hamas as terrorists “if we qualify the Israeli army as terrorists”. The PTB president added that he considered Israel “more terrorist than Hamas in the last ten years”.

According to the president of the MR, these declarations constitute a clear violation of the Charter of Democracy signed on May 8, 2022 by the democratic parties running for elections in the French-speaking area. This charter was renewed following Georges-Louis Bouchez had been in debate with the president of Vlaams Belang, Tom Van Grieken. It had not been signed by the PTB.

”The Charter that we signed is clear: we made a commitment to never collaborate with a group or a movement proposing proposals justifying the use of violence, which constitutes a clear attack on the democratic principles which underpin our political system . Mr Hedebouw has crossed a red line. These statements are the expression, within the meaning of the Charter, of hate speech which, under the guise of anti-Zionism, reflects a certain form of anti-Semitism. These words in no way constitute opinions but rather offenses that must be denounced and condemned,” specifies the letter sent to the presidents of Ecolo, PS, Engagés and DéFI.

Israeli ambassador frightened by Raoul Hedebouw’s comments: “It’s irresponsible”

Regarding the attitude of the far-left party, the Montois gives us this additional comment. “The real scandal is these comments regarding the fact that Israel is as terrorist as Hamas. We are completely delusional, we are beyond ignorance. There is a manipulation of the conflict for electoral purposes. We are inciting hatred towards Israelis and therefore, as a consequence, towards Jews. Not all Jews are Israeli. But this type of statement has an impact. The fact that we can no longer display the Israeli flag in Belgium says a lot. Anti-Zionism means wanting the State of Israel to disappear. But today, no one thinks that Israel will disappear. Those who fuel anti-Zionism are in fact insidiously fueling anti-Semitism.”

Georges-Louis Bouchez deplores the PTB’s participation in demonstrations during which slogans calling for the eradication of Israel are chanted, such as “From the river to the sea”. “The PTB is not just reacting to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They make it a subject that they stir up and exploit for electoral purposes. I hope that the democratic parties will at some point react and indicate that they refuse to work with the PTB.”

This is how a galaxy of left-wing associations imports the Israeli-Palestinian conflict into our streets

Applying a sanitary cordon around the PTB means not allowing them to join an executive, whatever the level of power. This means not being around them and trying to make them invisible. This invisibility might extend to the media, as is currently the case for the far right in French-speaking Belgium. Several parties sit on the RTBF board of directors. This political presence might decide to no longer give voice to the PTB on the public television channel.

This shows that a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since the time when Georges-Louis Bouchez considered that the PTB was a party with which we might still debate…
