Comparing Air Quality in Paris and Brussels Metro: Findings and Measures Taken

2023-07-22 17:45:00

Last May, a FranceInfo investigation sounded the alarm regarding air quality in the Paris metro. In some places, the concentration of fine particles greatly exceeds the thresholds recommended by the WHO. With one observation: in the City of Lights, the air is, in some stations, more polluted underground than outside. Pollution due to the outside air to which are added pollutants from the metro itself.

And in Brussels? The question was addressed by MP Ingrid Parmentier (Ecolo) during the last “mobility commission” of the Brussels Parliament. We learn, via Minister Elke Van den Brandt (Groen), that new measurements were carried out in 2023 in three stations (Vandervelde, Ribaucourt and Gare du Midi), “chosen for their underground location and their date of construction (they are the oldest)”.

And the results are, in the eyes of the minister, less frightening from Outre-Quiévrain: “All dust is concerned by the measurements, and has always given results more than ten times lower than the specified maximums”.

The better results of the Brussels metro compared to the Paris metro are, according to Van den Brandt, linked to several reasons: “its vehicles do not run on tires, which therefore does not cause tire wear on a tread, as a car does on the road. In addition, all Stib metro trains use energy recuperation electric braking technologies. This system avoids the production of dust by abrasion of the brake blocks at full speed on the brake discs”. To which is added the absence of a heat engine in Brussels compared to other underground networks.
