Comparative Consumer Test: Ranking the Best White Puddings in Supermarkets

New episode of our consumer test series. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the five supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands to “white products” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of 20 points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality-ratio. price. This week, we tested white pudding.

The big test of brands: only one hummus stands out from the competition for an aperitif (COMPARATIVE)

Appearance of the packaging: overall, it mightn’t be simpler: transparent plastic packaging. Only Colruyt deviates from the rule, with a black tray which highlights the product more. For its part, Aldi has made an effort on the packaging with a colorful label highlighting the Belgian origin of the product. Finally, Aubel relies on vacuum packaging. It’s not very aesthetic, but it can give some customers confidence regarding the freshness of the product.

Appearance of the product: Colruyt also stands out from the competition, with a blood sausage that smells very good and well-distributed herbs. Visually, it’s practically the same thing at Delhaize. The smell is also good, but less present all the same. It’s the same at Aldi. For the big brand, Aubel, the pudding was really very thick, the same weight as two puddings from other brands. But the smell and texture made me want to taste it just as much. For poor students, we first find Intermarché. The puddings were less beautiful, much more humid. Plus, the smell was too subtle. It was even worse at Carrefour and Lidl, where you smelled more herbs than meat.

The big test of the brands: finally a major competitor for Magnum ice cream! (COMPARATIVE)

Nutritional value: Nutri-Score D for everyone, it’s obviously fatty and salty.

Readability of the label: Intermarché, Lidl, Carrefour and Colruyt do the job, but without being impeccable. For the rest, it was insufficient. The text was even partly cut at Delhaize… The worst was the big brand. It took a magnifying glass to clearly read the label.

Taste: three products are failing: Lidl, Intermarché and Carrefour. For Lidl, taste confirmed smell. We only tasted the herbs, it was very strong and disgusting. For Carrefour and Intermarché, it especially lacked taste. The big brand is located just above, with a sausage that is too salty. But at least it tasted good. For Delhaize, we arrived at a quality product, even if it was not high enough. For Aldi, this is pretty special. Indeed, it didn’t really taste like the classic white pudding. We have rather compared it to a mixture between blood sausage and hunter or cervelas. It was very good, but a little off topic. Finally, Colruyt is clearly above the competition: taste, texture, freshness, everything was there.

The big brand test: salamis on the test bench (COMPARATIVE)

Value for money: for a tray of around 250 g, here are the prices in order: Aubel (€5.99), Lidl (€4.19), Carrefour (€3.95), Colruyt (€3. €29), Aldi (€2.99), Delhaize (€2.57) and Intermarché (€2.45).
