Even though the tool has already helped to solve many crimes — mainly in the United States —, the lack of transparency about how it works has been the subject of a heated debate.
According to TechCrunch, Cellebrite has been trying to keep its acting techniques as secret as possible. This was even emphasized by a senior company official in a leaked customer training video. In the images, the man advises that the company’s techniques should be kept secret, arguing that a leak could be harmful to the police community around the world.
This type of guidance has been worrying experts, who say that authorities should be transparent about the methods of obtaining evidence. According to them, Cellebrite’s devices should be able to be examined by the defense so that there is certainty that they work correctly and that no failure can affect the results obtained.
In a statement to the website, Cellebrite followed the same line as its employee and stated that the leak of the company’s methods could be harmful to the police community. For the company, a disclosure could make life easier for criminals and make the work of law enforcement agencies more difficult.
On the other hand, specialists argue that solutions such as the one offered by Cellebrite make room for authoritarian countries or criminal groups to also make use of these technologies to exploit vulnerable devices and, consequently, commit crimes, silence the opposition and invade the privacy of third parties.
