Smartphones with ever-improving photographic capabilities and social networks have generated a revolution in the way we consume images. What in the past was limited to movies with 12, 24 or 36 poses has become unlimited with cloud storage. For a single moment, it’s clicks and more clicks. But, with new habits, the tradition of developing printed photographs and immortalizing special moments in family albums almost disappeared.
Users of social networks, such as Instagram, are increasingly favoring the instantaneousness of records, which are almost perishable. The story feature, for example, is available for just 24 hours. Poll by Opinion Box, carried out in January, shows that 54% of people post stories at least once a week. And the network already reaches more than 2 billion users and approximately 99 million Brazilians.
Even so, consumers continue to see value in immortalizing moments, although the rush of everyday life often makes it difficult. A market survey by Leve Fotos, a photo album platform, showed that 47% of respondents had not printed any photos in the previous 12 months. However, almost 80% reported being interested in making albums, to record memories or to give as gifts. When the question is the ideal way of sending, WhatsApp was the preferred platform by 46% of the respondents. Most respondents are from Rio de Janeiro, aged between 35 and 54, married with children, and 71.4% are women.
The data proved what businesswoman Gabriela Haber already experienced: cell phone full of photos and nothing printed to show friends and family. Carioca, her parents followed from a distance, from Paraná, the growth of their granddaughter Filipa through the photos sent by WhatsApp. The idea of organizing and perpetuating the records came from Gabriela’s mother, Norma, who started to assemble albums with pictures of her granddaughter.
Graduated in business administration, Gabriela saw a business opportunity: creating a photo printing startup, rescuing the habit of albums, and innovating with sending via WhatsApp. “You can even save the photos on your cell phone, but they are hidden and no one else sees those photos, they just stay there. Worse is when, sometimes, it happens to lose. Therefore, it is fundamental to immortalize these moments”, said Gabriela.
With the market research data, the businesswoman realized that sending via WhatsApp facilitated the dynamics for the customer and was the main innovation for the startup. The first step to put the business into practice was to automate WhatsApp contact, with the creation of a bot in the messaging app that receives orders and photos from customers.
To get around the common difficulty of choosing the material to send for printing, she gives the tip of favoring the photos on your cell phone and sending them. Image quality is maintained if they are sent as a file by the application.
The assembly and layout of the album are important for the final result, going beyond printing. The process takes an average of 10 working days, until the arrival of the album.
Seeking to expand its presence in the market, the startup sought partnerships with travel agencies, which now include the creation of a photo album of the trip in packages, and with schools, so that parents receive an album with records of their children in activities and events. “Our main innovation was, without a doubt, sending via WhatsApp. This guarantees practicality in the service, which is essential nowadays”, concludes Gabriela Haber.
