Vienna (OTS) For the 5th time since 2019, the virtual 50-day health impulse for companies and their employees will take place once more this year from October 1st to November 19th. Then it’s time to collect minutes of exercise with colleagues every day and at the same time do good for the environment. The aim of the Austrian Company Challenge is to integrate sufficient exercise, healthy nutrition and mental fitness into the everyday life of the participants in the long term. This has been working very successfully since 2019 thanks to the low-threshold and group-dynamic gamification approach of the company challenge concept, as well as daily motivation and information from sports legends and life coaches – the sports and nutrition scientists and mental coaches. The central element is the joint collection of movement minutes with the colleagues via the app, in which a lot of interesting information from the experts can also be called up. A healthy and active lifestyle is practiced over 50 days with the aim of making it sustainable. dr Robert Fritz, head of sports medicine at the Vienna Sports Clinic and honorary ambassador for the company challenge: “As a doctor, I prescribe medication in my surgery every day. The prescriptions always state a dose, duration and regularity of use. The drug “exercise” only works if it is used in the right dose. Look forward to “Straide” – the first “digital recipe for movement”. It was developed by the specialists in the sports ordination and is now being used for the first time as part of the company challenge.”

Too little exercise shortens the number of years worth living

Since, according to a study by the Federal Sports Organization (BSO), more than two thirds of Austrians do not exercise enough and do not meet the 150 minutes of exercise recommended by the WHO, well-known personalities such as Kira Grünberg, Armin Assinger, Lizz Görgl, Michael Walchhofer and Clemens Doppler sat down and many more as honorary ambassadors of the company challenge for a new culture of movement in Austria. Anyone who has ever experienced restricted mobility knows this. The importance of exercise for health has also been scientifically proven many times over. It is therefore dramatic that two thirds of the population exercise less than 150 minutes a week. That urgently needs to change! I’m sure there is a simple, fun way for everyone to bring exercise into everyday life! Growing old in a self-determined manner with just a few ailments – that’s what I wish for everyone. But to do that, you have to keep moving and keep moving!”

Congruence of objectives Workplace health promotion

Local companies are also very interested in physically and mentally fit employees. Mag. Harald Haris G. Janisch is chairman of the specialist group for personal counseling and personal care in the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, which supports the participants in the 50-day health impulse significantly through the skills of the life coaches. It is regarding strengthening personal responsibility, helping to anchor a healthy lifestyle in everyday life in the long term and taking into account the reality of life and everyday working life. The experts for “Food-Move-Mind” from the Vienna Chamber of Commerce are happy to support the participants and the participating companies on their way to conscious self-management.” Here, too, the Straide app plays a central role, because all the content of the experts – whether live or on-demand – can be accessed digitally via the app.

dr Andreas Heralic, Managing Director of SPORTS.Selection, is delighted with the new app: “Sportordination Wien is one of the largest sports science and sports medicine institutes in Europe and not only has many years of experience and know-how in many sports-related areas, but also in the field of workplace health promotion. I am all the more pleased that we are now expanding our cooperation and were also able to find a profitable cooperation for the participants with their new app.”

Corporate Social Responsibility / Environmental Social Governance

Companies can benefit in several ways from their participation. In addition to the economic effects of physically and mentally fit workers, participating companies, together with the Chamber of Commerce, partners and the many honorary ambassadors, contribute to the establishment of a new culture of exercise in Austria. At the same time, the company challenge increases the basic motivation of the employees and contributes to the fact that existing offers of workplace health promotion are used more frequently and by more employees. The positive competition with other companies not only strengthens the team structure and identification with the company, companies also have the opportunity to position themselves as attractive employers. Because your own health, both physical and mental, is becoming increasingly important for many employees.

Young generation would like more support from employers

In 2023, SPORTS.Selection, together with the market research company Marketagent.com, carried out a representative study on workplace health promotion in Austria, according to which almost 50% of employees in Austria would like more support from their own company in terms of nutrition, exercise and mental fitness. The young generation in particular places a special focus on mental fitness and stands out significantly compared to older colleagues: 55% of 18-29 year olds expressed the desire for more company offers as part of the study.

Participants reduce footprint and plant trees

But the environment is also a major concern for those working in Austria. According to the motto “Do good for your own health and at the same time for the environment”, a tree is planted for every thousandth minute of exercise. In 2022 there were already 8,633 trees, which additionally strengthens the already footprint-reducing effect of the company challenge. Because the participants are increasingly walking short distances or switching to bicycles, reducing their meat consumption and increasingly buying seasonal and regional products. The “tree balance” is also displayed in addition to the movement minutes in the “Stride” app and is intended to provide additional motivation.
