Company | Alcohol and pregnancy: the results are not good in the southern region

2023-08-26 09:05:37

Alcohol and pregnancy do not mix well, everyone is more or less aware of it. But did you know that this consumption caused a so-called “fetal alcohol syndrome” in the child? A condition that can cause various heart defects, psychiatric pathologies or even learning disabilities. This is the fight that the SAF France association has been leading for fifteen years. In collaboration with Umih 84 (Union of trades and hotel industries) and its leaders Patrice Mounier and Richard Hémin, it seeks to raise awareness among future parents of this syndrome.

A priority: not making mothers feel guilty

To get as much data as possible and raise awareness, the association commissioned a study from Opinion Way to reveal parents’ level of knowledge regarding blood alcohol levels during pregnancy. Studies have been carried out in all regions in order to have precise figures.

In the South region, 29% of mothers surveyed said they had consumed alcohol during their last pregnancy, 9% of them at least once a month. The association comes up once morest a main difficulty:It’s completely underdiagnosed, there’s a terrible taboo. The question today is welcoming and making women feel guilty“, explains Catherine Grange, pediatrician. And to do this, the association has a preventive plan in three stages. Raise awareness, develop a link between social, health, justice and National Education, and set up centers resources in each region to support diagnosis.

Fathers would not be exempt from all responsibility. During conception, American studies show an impact of the alcohol consumption of the parent and might be the cause of cerebral or facial malformations. Alcohol cessation measures should then be taken by both parents, according to the associations.
