Compact Navi 31 chip

Possible test vehicle for the Radeon RX 7800 series

After there was a supposed picture of a Navi-32 package with a GCD and four MCDs a few days ago Moore’s Law is Dead published a video of a GPU package in one of his videos, which shows a Navi 31 chip in a smaller package.

We still see a GCD with an area of regarding 308 mm² and six MCDs, of which only four are said to be active. According to the leaker, AMD has been sending these prototypes to its board partners for several months. The purpose of the 40 x 40 mm smaller package should be that the platform for the mid-range cards can already be developed and tested here. This includes the design of a PCB and the design of the cooler.

The need for a smaller Navi 31 package is said to be due to the fact that a Navi 32 package has not yet been completed or is only now available.

Since we can now be sure that a Radeon RX 7800 (XT) will have 16 GB of graphics memory, AMD cuts the Navi 31 prototype to 256 bits by using only four active MCDs and the said 16 GB of graphics memory . With four MCDs, the Infinity Cache also comes to the assumed 64 MB.

AMD might also use a more compact Navi 31 prototype to launch a Radeon RX 7900M XTX. According to Moore’s Law is Dead, AMD is said to be working on it as well, but it’s not clear if such a product will eventually emerge.

It is still not known when a Radeon RX 7800 series will appear. Lisa Su recently confirmed corresponding plans without specific information.
