Community of Sant’Egidio: 300 refugees from Afghanistan arrive in Italy

Refugees thanked Italy and other organizations for rescuing 300 Afghanistan refugees through humanitarian corridors.

Their arrival in Italy is on Wednesday, July 27. There will be a press conference at Fiumicino that evening at 4 p.m.

230 Afghan refugees who have been refugees in Pakistan since last August are arriving in Italy on a flight from Islamabad. Their entry into Italy was made possible by the Memorandum of Understanding with Italy signed on 4 November 2021 by the Community of Sant’Egidio, Federation of Evangelical Churches, Tavola Valdese, Archi, Caritas Italy, I0M, INMP and UNHCR.

Italy will welcome more than 300 Afghan refugees today, July 25, and on Thursday, July 28, along with other refugees from Iran. This initiative is being prepared through humanitarian corridors. The refugees also expressed their gratitude for the free and voluntary commitment of the many Italian citizens who offered to stay in their homes. Also monastic communities, NGOs and various groups in civil society host refugees. Refugees will be welcomed in Fiumicino on Wednesday 27 July at 4.00pm.

There will also be a press conference in the presence of Italy’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Marina Sereni, President of the Sant’Egidio Society, Marco Impaliazzo, President of the Federation of Evangelical Churches in Italy, Daniele Garone, and the presidents and officials of other organizations.
