Most people ignore the main reason phones run so slowly, according to a tech repair expert who specializes in refurbishing old phones. Daily Mail.

Applications running in the background
Many apps run “stealth” in the background, which can slow down the device, says Kewin Charron, senior manager of retooling operations at BackMarket.com.
There are also a number of battery optimization features that most users are completely unaware of. Fortunately, on both iOS and Android, it’s easy to disable battery-draining apps and optimize your phone with a few simple settings tweaks.
He also said that users now use more apps than ever before.
Apps can also run “in the background,” eating up the phone’s RAM and CPU — and slowing down the entire phone without users realizing it, Charron explains.
What users can do to prevent the phone from “slowing down”.
To avoid your phone starting to run slow, you should go into your phone’s settings menu to limit the apps that can – or can’t – run in the background.
“Both iPhone and Android users can adjust their settings to automatically control and stop apps running in the background.
“For Apple users, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and select Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi & Cellular Data or Off to turn off Background App Refresh entirely.
“Similarly for Android users, to see what apps are running in the background, go to “Settings > Developer Options > Running Services. You can then close these apps by going to Settings > Apps and select an app you want to stop and then Force Stop’
First you’ll need to enable developer options – search for “developer” in the Settings menu, then enable it (how to do this varies depending on the phone you’re using).
Charron said that “this should have an immediate effect on the phone’s speed.”
Phone storage is full
Another classic reason for a phone to run slowly is when the phone’s storage is almost full, which can slow things down, warns Charron.
“Phones need regarding 10% of available storage space to store cache and temporary files, which allows apps to run smoothly on your device,” he added.
“Having available storage space will also mean you can keep your phone’s software up to date.”
To free up space, Charron recommends deleting old apps — especially games, which use up a lot of space — and deleting videos or moving them to the cloud.
