Journalists’ union criticizes government coalition for destroying the “Wiener Zeitung”

Vienna (OTS) Eike-Clemens Kullmann, chairman of the journalists’ union in the GPA, criticizes that the federal government is now evidently rushing its “Vienna Newspaper Destruction Law” through parliament at breakneck speed. Without addressing any of the criticisms of the numerous supporters of the continued existence in print form of the oldest daily newspaper in the world, the law was passed in the responsible committee by all members of parliament from the governing parties.

At the same time, those responsible for the media show that “their commitments to the workforce aren’t worth a single euro.” On the one hand – even before the law has even been finally passed in Parliament – a holiday ban is imposed on the workforce for the time when the law is to be implemented is provided. Then the employees should be available to announce their resignation in one-on-one meetings. “This is despite the fact that Minister Raab had assured us in October that there would be no layoffs,” says Kullmann. According to union information, there are talks of up to 100 layoffs.

The announcement that the editors would continue to have a decisive say in an editorial statute also seems to have been a lie. In the proposal led by the Green coalition partner, the core of the statute is hollowed out. “It should therefore no longer be possible for the editorial team to refuse the appointment of an editor-in-chief,” says Kullmann. In the case of future products, this should be the sole responsibility of the managing director, who, by the way, was a former functionary of the Young VP Burgenland.

Incidentally, his area of responsibility also includes the so-called “Media Hub”, which is to become its own journalistic training and further education facility. “With 6 million euros a year, journalism training is being nationalized here instead of providing the existing expertise through private training and further education institutes such as the Media Academy and the fjum with the necessary financial resources,” criticizes Kullmann.
