Commission in San Lázaro withdraws compulsory military service initiative for women

Withdrew from the agenda from National Defense Commission of the Chamber of Deputies the opinion establishing the compulsory military service for the women in Mexico.

The foregoing was detailed by the president of said commission, the PAN member Ricardo Villarreal Garciaat the beginning of said meeting this Tuesday

“This Presidency received an official letter from the deputy Mario Miguel Carrillo Cubillas, who requests that we withdraw the seventh item from the agenda corresponding to the opinion of the initiative with a draft decree that reforms various provisions of the Military Service Law, presented by the deputy, Laura Imelda Perez Seguraof the Morena parliamentary group”, announced

“The foregoing in order to be in a position to continue with the analysis of said initiative,” he added.

The withdrawal was approved by the majority of the members of the National Defense Commission.

Last May, the Morena bench in San Lázaro had proposed an initiative to make military service mandatory for women when they turn 18 years of age, which is currently voluntary.

This was a proposal from Deputy Laura Imelda Pérez Segura, who was seeking reform the law on the matter before the drop in voluntary integration that was approved in the year 2000.

“Despite institutional efforts, fewer and fewer women are interested in the National Military Service,” reads the initiative.

According to data from the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena), women’s participation in military service fell sharply between 2000 and 2020 to as much as 95 percent.

“During 2000, the number of women who decided to participate was 18,088. For the year 2006, the number was 6,647. In 2012, 1,639 women were registered. During 2018, the number of women volunteers was 1,171. By 2020, there were only 797 women volunteers in the military service,” the document details.

“This fall is attributed to the lack of dissemination of military service campaigns, the lack of budget, as well as taboos and intra-family machismo. For this reason, the initiative would contribute to demonstrating that military service is not exclusively for men and would help them break the reproduction of machismo schemes within their own family”, he stressed.
