After the negotiation, the union accused the employers of a “completely incomprehensible” attitude and the employers spoke of the employees being “out of touch with reality”. Negotiations are scheduled to continue on November 9th.

Union negotiator Helga Fichtinger had called for an 11 percent increase in wages and more vacation as well as a discussion regarding a general reduction in working hours. The employers, for their part, did not submit any offer at all, criticized the union in its broadcast in the followingnoon. “The behavior of the employers is completely incomprehensible and we are outraged,” writes Martin Müllauer, chairman of the GPA trade division. “Today was not a negotiation, it was an attempt to break previous rules of the game and unilaterally dictate their terms to us,” said the GPA negotiating team.

“To say the least, I am irritated by the lack of reality that dominated today’s round of negotiations. The employee representatives seem to be completely negating the extremely difficult situation in which domestic trading companies find themselves,” writes Rainer Trefelik, chairman of the federal trade division the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, which negotiates the collective agreement on the employers’ side, in a press release. The union should “move away from the ‘economically unfeasible’ demands” by the next negotiation date. A significant increase in salaries while reducing working hours is not conceivable. The most important thing is maintaining jobs.

“The 11 percent increase in KV demanded by the union is unthinkable for us, because it would make sustainable job security impossible and economically ruin many trading companies,” writes trade association managing director Rainer Will in his own press release. Government measures once morest inflation would have to be included in the calculation of the collective agreement.
