Commemoration of February 12th: political scientist in Linz, SP leader Babler in Steyr

Next Monday, February 12th, will be the 90th anniversary of the outbreak of the February fighting in 1934.

Upper Austria’s SPÖ is commemorating the Austrian civil war, which led to the ban of social democracy and the establishment of the corporate state dictatorship, with a series of events on Sunday, February 11th. These begin on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. with a tour of Linz’s Bulgariplatz – named following the Linz social democrat Anton Bulgari, who was executed by the corporate state regime on February 22, 1934.

At 9:30 a.m. a wreath-laying ceremony will take place in the courtyard of the state party headquarters at Landstrasse 36 – the former Hotel Schiff, from which the first shots were fired on February 12th.

The program continues at 10:45 a.m. in Café Central with keynote speeches by SP state party leader Michael Lindner and political scientist Nadja Meisterhans, whose research focuses on current democratic developments and the question of how quickly democracy can be derailed. Lindner will, among other things, talk regarding the state SP’s current “democracy package”.

On Monday, February 12th, SP leader Andreas Babler will be the keynote speaker at the SPÖ Steyr memorial event at 3:30 p.m. (memorial in the park on Wokralstrasse, Ennsleite), before he travels on to the Vienna February commemoration at the Goethehof in Kaisermühlen (6 p.m.).
