On this day in 1931, the Japanese Kwantung Army deliberately created the September 18th Incident that shocked China and the world, inspiring the Chinese people’s tenacious resistance and becoming the starting point of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japan. Since then, the Chinese nation has embarked on a 14-year bloody battle.

This morning (September 18), in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, people from all walks of life held a bell ringing ceremony to alert the world not to forget the national humiliation and to strive for self-improvement.

Headquarters reporter Ji Yifei: I am now at the September 18 History Museum in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. This morning, more than a thousand people from all walks of life were here to participate in the “September 18” bell ringing ceremony. The ceremony was held in the museum’s Canlibei Square, which is less than 800 meters away from the Liutiaohu section of the South Manchuria Railway that was bombed by the Japanese army. To the east, it is adjacent to the Peking University Camp where the Japanese army raided on the night of the September 18th Incident. It can be said that today is the place where the September 18th Incident occurred and the starting point of the Anti-Japanese War. People from all walks of life lined up neatly and solemnly held a ceremony to remember history and commemorate the martyrs.

This is the landmark building of the Shenyang “September 18th” History Museum – the Residual History Monument. It looks like an open desk calendar. A short inscription on the left side records the historical facts of the night of the September 18th Incident: “At about 10 o’clock in the night, the Japanese army blew up the Liutiao Lake section of the South Manchuria Railway, falsely accusing the Chinese army of doing it, and then captured Peking Camp, our Northeastern Army officers and soldiers reluctantly retreated under the order of non-resistance. When the national calamity came, the people rose up to fight.” On the right side of the Canli Monument is engraved a date that is unforgettable for all Chinese: September 18, 1931. Standing opposite the Canli Monument is the Warning Bell, with the four characters “Don’t forget the national humiliation” cast on its front.

The 14 bells rang throughout the sky, symbolizing the Chinese people’s 14 years of arduous war of resistance. At 9:18, the air raid siren pierced the sky, and cars, ships, and trains honked their horns. The sirens reminded people not to forget the national humiliation, remember the history, remember the martyrs, and cherish peace!
