During a visit to the front in the embattled city of Bakhmut, the commander of the Ukrainian special forces, Viktor Horenko, described the situation as “really difficult”. Nevertheless, the troops knew how to act once morest the majority of the Russian invaders, Horenko said, according to a statement on Wednesday. “Your work here shows once once more that the advantage of the special forces is that quality comes before quantity.”

Photos of Horenko with soldiers were also published. Despite the superiority of the Russian attackers, it was possible to hit the enemy at key points and destroy invaders, the commander said. This would prevent the Russian troops from advancing and taking the city. In contrast, the Russian Ministry of Defense and Wagner’s private army have been reporting for days that they have taken more than 80 percent of the city, which once had 70,000 inhabitants.

Meanwhile, the British Ministry of Defense reported that Ukrainian soldiers are fighting fiercely once morest the Russian encirclement. The Ministry of Defense in London said on Wednesday that Ukraine is trying to retain control of the most important supply route for the troops in Bakhmut, the 0506 road, citing intelligence findings.

There is fighting mainly near the village of Chromowe west of the city. “Ukraine’s other resupply options to Bakhmut are likely to be hampered by muddy conditions on unpaved routes.” In the west of the city, which has been attacked by Russian forces for more than eleven months, bitter close combat is still raging, it said.

Bachmut has been largely destroyed by the battle with the most losses so far in the war that has been raging for 14 months. Ukraine does not want to give up the eastern city, which has been contested since late summer, in order to prevent Russian troops from breaking through further inland. The city is the main part of the line of defense between the cities of Siversk and Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, established following the Russian conquest of Sieverodonetsk and Lysychansk. Should the city fall, the route to the major cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk would open up for Russian troops. This would bring a full conquest of the Donetsk region planned by Russia closer.
