In an interview with Variety, the 18-year-old star opened up regarding coming out and how his character Will Byers helped him come to terms with his own sexuality. “Once I fully understood that Will was gay, accepting that I myself was gay happened very quickly,” he said. I would be in a completely different phase if I hadn’t had to embody Will, soak it up, and if he wasn’t there to help me accept myself. I think if I had never played this character, I would probably still be in the closet. »

The actor posted a coming-out video on TikTok in January during a long drive following dropping off his twin sister at college. In the clip, which has now been viewed 90 million times, he might be heard saying: “When I finally told my friends and family I was gay following being scared to come out of the closet for 18 years, all they said was ‘We know’,” with the caption: “Guess I’m more like Will than I thought. »

The actor said following posting the video, he avoided looking at his phone, which was exploding with messages. “I didn’t want to sit there, nervously waiting to see what people were going to say,” he explained. I just wanted to put it aside, be confident in who I am and know that I don’t have to worry regarding what people think anymore. »

Noah Schnapp shared that once he finally took a look at his phone, he was overwhelmed with the positive messages he had received. ” I was crying. I was like, ‘I did it. It’s finish. I don’t have to worry anymore.”

Noah Schnapp has played Will Byers since he was 10 years old, when he had his first screen test for the role. The hit Netflix series then premiered in 2016 when he was 11 years old.
