Over two million francs for a comic? To a bidder and Marvel fan, a 1939 edition was worth that much money.
A particularly rare example of a 1939 Marvel comic has fetched more than $2.4 million at an online auction. An “extremely passionate collector” won on Thursday evening with a bid of $ 2,427,880, according to the head of the Comic Connect auction house, Vincent Zurzolu.
A special feature of the “Marvel Comics #1” issue is that it is a “pay copy” on which the publisher handwritten what the artists involved in the comic received for their contributions. For example, Frank R. Paul received $25 for the cover. “It’s an incredibly important look behind the scenes,” said Zurzolo. From this book came the Marvel Universe with later comic book heroes like Spiderman, Hulk and the Avengers, films, TV series and video games.
The issue introduced Marvel heroes like Sub-Mariner and the original Johnny Storm aka Human Torch, who later became part of the «Fantastic Four».
