Artificial Intelligence is facing one of its most publicized problems after comedian Sarah Silverman sued Meta and OpenIA for using her work without her consent in ChatGPT.

According to the American, ChatGPT was fed with “The Bedwetter: stories of courage, redemption”, a series of anecdotes compiled in her book and which has copyright protection in the North country.

For ChatGPT to work, it feeds on what exists on the internet, such as the “Colossal Clean Crawled Corpus” space, which contains thousands of personal blogs and books that were not necessarily uploaded in compliance with the law.

Together with a couple of novelists, he filed the legal challenge in a California court. The three of them realized the “theft” of information when they asked ChatGPT for a detailed summary of their works, which was granted without any problem, so they began to investigate its causes.

At the time, both OpenAI and Meta published the sources with which they nurtured their creation, including “Project Gutenberg”, which the comedian describes as being made from illegal libraries.

The other books that sparked the lawsuit are “Sandman slim” by Richard Kadrey and “Ararat” by Christopher Golden.

The controversy generated in the written sector is not something new. Last March, the Writers Guild of America (WGA), which has now paralyzed Hollywood with a two-month strike, stressed that AI should be seen as a tool and not as a writer.

The AI allows anyone to write an idea to develop and will start collecting ideas from the internet (sometimes textual) to form a story. Tech-worshippers have said it will help shorten creative times.

The WGA has established that a material generated by IAno can be considered literary or source material, equivalent to novels, plays or adaptations, because it is a “regurgitation of what it has previously ingested”.
