Combatting Islamophobia in Jette: Community Response to Shocking Graffiti

It is no longer visible, hidden under the black paint. But a few hours earlier, an Islamophobic tag adorned a building under renovation on Place du Miroir, the nerve center of the commune of Jette, and more broadly in the north-west of Brussels.

“Arab = thief”, we might read. A highly shocking inscription that the town demanded to see removed. “We have instructed the services to remove the tag. But in the meantime, the contractor had had it removed,” tells us the mayor Claire Vandevivere (Les Engagés), who says she is very shocked. “We condemn, of course. We advocate living together in Jette. There’s no way we’re going to see that here.”

On social networks, the photo circulated a lot and condemnations quickly multiplied. A “horror”, “shameful”, “worse and worse Jette”, “sad”… we can, among other things, read on the Facebook group dedicated to the inhabitants of Jette.
