To combat the harmful effects of the consumption of nitrous oxide, including abandoned waste, solutions are being studied, both in Belgium and abroad. Nationwide, only sales to minors are prohibited. But there is not yet a general ban at national level, although a bill to ban the sale, transport and possession of nitrous oxide for recreational purposes is in Belgium. “In the Netherlands, such a nationwide ban on nitrous oxide already came into force on January 1, 2023″says Brusafe.
But “criminalizing” nitrous oxide might also cause adverse effects. According to the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction, “thesupply restriction can facilitate criminal organizations, theft or diversion of the legal supply chain, or even illegal manufacture of the product“.
Unsurprisingly, the study conducted by the Brusafe observatory leads to a call for more contextual information (better knowledge of the product, its uses and the profile of consumers) to define a policy intended to reduce its problematic use.
