Combatting Biased Media Portrayal: The Concerns of CFCM

In a media landscape where objectivity should be the norm, the French Council of Muslim Worship (CFCM) expressed its concern regarding an alarming trend. According to a press release dated April 15, the CFCM condemns an unhealthy fixation of certain media on Islam, which often establish a forced link between news items and the Muslim community, or choose to ignore them if such a link cannot be established.

The CFCM emphasizes that this biased and biased approach aims to present Islam and Muslims as sources of anxiety and concern for French society, sowing fear and sometimes even inciting hatred. This media strategy is considered dangerous and must be fought vigorously.

The organization notes with bitterness that when the origin of a suspect in a news item is perceived as Muslim, some media rush to link the event to Islam and Muslims, even in the absence of any link. religious. The suspect’s first name then becomes a focal point, often overshadowing the wrongdoing itself.

Conversely, when incidents involve individuals whose first names do not suggest affiliation with Islam, these same media tend to preserve anonymity and minimize coverage of the event, even if it is extreme gravity.

The CFCM cites the example of a knife attack that occurred in Australia on April 13, 2024, which left six victims and several injured, including a baby. Initially, the CNEWS channel widely covered the event, with experts suggesting an “oriental” origin of the suspect and mentioning links with radical Islam. However, once it was revealed that the attacker was named Joël Cauchi, media interest abruptly declined.

A Mediapart investigation reveals that this practice is sometimes institutionalized, as evidenced by a message from an editor-in-chief of Cnews, who allegedly ordered a case in Cholet to be abandoned for lack of references to the Koran.

The CFCM denounces this selective focus on acts committed by or alleged to be Muslims, which constitutes a form of manipulation and toxic propaganda. This practice is contrary to journalistic ethics, the fair treatment of information, and the democratic and legal principles of France. It also contributes to the worrying increase in racism and anti-Muslim acts in the country.
