Combating Cholera Epidemic in Zimbabwe: Robust Strategies Yielding Results

HARARE, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) — New suspected cases of cholera are decreasing in Zimbabwe, thanks to robust intervention strategies to combat the epidemic, a minister said on Tuesday.

One thousand and twenty-five new suspected cases of cholera were reported in the week ending February 20, 2024, down from 1,286 cases the previous week, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Communications said. Broadcasting Services, Jenfan Muswere, at a press conference.

“The vigorous vaccination campaign is yielding visible results in known cholera risk areas, while screening for cholera and other infectious diseases continues at all points of entry,” Muswere said.

He added that the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention contributed to the purchase of water treatment chemicals, branded tents for oral rehydration points and the training of 500 health workers communities in the capital, Harare, and Chitungwiza.

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, Zimbabwe has recorded a total of 26,189 suspected cholera cases, 25,448 recoveries and 71 confirmed deaths since the outbreak began a year ago until Monday last. END
