The Ministry of National Education, in partnership with the October 5 celebration committee, celebrated World Teacher’s Day this Tuesday, October 24 at the ministerial sphere of Diamniadio. This day, which coincides with the celebration of Rose October, also allowed the ministry to play its part in the implementation of activities to combat cancer by conducting free screenings for its female staff. “This year, we thought regarding it and as usual, we are celebrating Pink October Day. We said that we are going to combine the two and take advantage of the opportunity that Pink October offers to do activities dedicated to female staff , to women teachers at the central level as well as the decentralized level”, supported the secretary general of the Ministry of National Education, Khady Diop Mbodj, indicating that they have designated a program to be implemented in this direction. As in previous years, “in good understanding, we designate a program each year which we implement during the month of October. The other years it was blood donations, it was also sporting activities such as meetings hiking trails chaired by the Minister of Education,” she recalled.
According to Doctor Mouhamadou Bachir Ba, radiation oncologist at the Dalal Jaam hospital in Guédiawaye, YAK data estimated that in Senegal there are between 11,000 or even 12,000 new cases of cancer per year. And breast cancer makes up regarding 16% of all cancers. While cervical cancer is estimated at 17%, or a cumulative 35% of all cancers. “Across the world, there will be around 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer worldwide. So, it’s a bit of a shake-up epidemiology because just a few years ago, lung cancer was the most common cancer, but currently it is breast cancer which is being diagnosed more and more. Which means that the incidence is much higher than lung cancer. It is a cancer which is more common in regions tropical in sub-Saharan Africa and perhaps a little in Australia and which explains the incidence linked to infection”, detailed Doctor Mouhamadou Bachir Ba who criticizes the late consultations of patients. “Patients consult late and the stages are locally advanced. In this stage, treatments are difficult, are expensive and also, the chances of recovery are much lower compared to early stages where all means are available to treat and heal his patients”, raised awareness by Doctor Mouhamadou Bachir Ba.
