In Valais, clubs and cantonal football associations are increasingly facing abusive, even violent, parents during their children’s matches. FC Conthey has taken steps to ensure that the perpetrators of these attacks can no longer access their pitch.

They had not seen each other since the incident. Friday, during a junior D match between FC Conthey and FC Vétroz, ten-year-old children saw their coach being insulted by parents of the opposing team. One of them grabbed him by the neck.

The altercation shocked many children who witnessed the scene. “I have received telephone calls from parents explaining that their children had come home crying, that some had woken up at night in tears,” explains Jonathan Bonnaz, president of FC Vétroz, on Wednesday in the 7:30 p.m.

The attacked coach filed a criminal complaint once morest the parents in question.

Sentiment d’injustice

During a closed session, which took place Tuesday evening, the children were able to debrief the attack thanks to the intervention of a therapist. “They were frustrated, with a feeling of injustice. But nevertheless quite happy to have been able to react correctly, to have been able to leave, without letting the situation get worse,” testifies Amandine Balet, scientific collaborator within the the Patouch association, which mobilizes once morest physical and psychological violence suffered by children.

Coach training

This is not the first time that Valais has faced abusive and aggressive parents during junior football matches. Fathers and mothers are regularly involved. “This is truly a social problem. It’s time to sound the alarm,” warns Jonathan Bonnaz.

FC Conthey has taken steps to ensure that the perpetrators of the attack can no longer access its grounds. “It is the duty of clubs to take measures, to get rid of certain harmful people. This must also involve training for coaches,” believes Philippe Moser, member of the Game and Fair Play Commission committee of the Valais Association of football.

The Association receives very few complaints from juniors and amateurs. Currently only two people are banned from stadiums anywhere in the country.
