The Columbus Blue Jackets simply unveiled their plan as the draft approached.
In an interview on Ohio station “97.1 The Fan”, the team’s president of hockey operations, John Davidson, said a center player will be selected third overall.
“We are going to draft a center. What center? It’s not cast in stone yet. We have just completed meetings with our amateur scouts in Columbus.”
If we take for granted that Connor Bedard and Adam Fantilli will start in the first and second rows, the “Jackets” should set their sights on the American Will Smith or the Swede Leo Carlsson.
“The World Hockey Championship is happening right now in Europe and Carlsson will be there for Sweden,” Davidson continued. We have an idea of where we’re headed, but I can’t reveal that information to the public. We are going to draft an excellent player. There are some very good ones in this draft.
“We know that, since the departure of Pierre-Luc Dubois, we have a crying need at the center. We’ll deal with it in the draft. We do not have the choice. It will be done.”
The San Jose Sharks will rule following the Blue Jackets. Unless they set their sights on Matvei Michkov, the Canadians probably won’t have the chance to draft Smith or Carlsson.
