Columbia: Penalties for pro-Palestinian students who refuse to leave the tents

According to reports, Columbia University in New York has begun imposing disciplinary sanctions on students who refuse to leave a protest camp that has been set up on the university campus for ten days.

The encampment, created by students who support the Palestinian cause, has become the focus of a growing political divide at the university.

The new wave of mobilization of students and other people against the war, conducted by the Israel against her Hamas at Gaza Striphas expanded to a number of university institutions, from California (west) to New England (northeast) through the central and southern states of the country.

“We have begun (administratively) expelling students as part of this new phase to ensure the safety of our campus,” Columbia’s vice president for communications Ben Chang told reporters Monday.

After a relatively quiet weekend on campus, where a “village” of tents has been set up, Columbia president Minous Shafik announced an ultimatum that expires at 9:00 p.m. (GMT). He called on the 200 people in the camp to leave after five days of negotiations to find an amicable solution failed.

Those students and other pro-Palestinians, who are demanding that the private Columbia University cut ties with midwives or businesses linked to Israel, called at the time to “protect the camp.”

Columbia University: “We will not leave, except by force,” says student

“We will not leave, except by force,” Sweda Polat, a student leader in the movement who denounced “an intimidation tactic that means nothing in the face of the death of more than 34,000 Palestinians,” shouted during a press briefing.

According to iefimerida, dozens of young people marched on the campus, their faces hidden under sanitary masks, clapping and chanting “Free Palestine,” according to an AFP reporter, who counted about fifty people remaining in the small encampment in a loose atmosphere and without police presence.

Columbia had assured on Friday that it would not call the NYPD to remove the tents.
