Colorado Avalanche’s Cale Makar Responds to Diving Accusations: Recap of Wild vs. Avalanche Game

Colorado Avalanche star Cale Makar responded Monday to accusations of diving pointed at him by Minnesota Wild head coach Dean Evason on Saturday.

Makar called two penalties in the Avalanche’s 3-2 win over the Wild on Saturday – a penalty called on Marco Rossi for tripping in the first period and an interference penalty called on Matt Boldy late in the third period.

“If he wants to worry regarding it, he can,” Makar told The Athletic on Evason’s comments. The first penalty, my legs just got hooked and I fell. I try to move from one side to the other. On the second, I made the same gesture four times last season and I always received a penalty. »

“I never try to dive. »

The Wild received a total of six minor penalties on Saturday, while the Avalanche received five penalties. None of the penalties caused by Makar led to a goal for the Avalanche, who finished the game 1/6 on the power play.

“Penalties, first of all, are difficult, right? Our sticks are present in several penalties, but there are big men who fall. We just talked regarding it. I don’t understand dives, Evason had said. I don’t understand in today’s hockey. It’s a different sport. I guess I need to stop thinking that way. One of the strongest players, one of the best skaters in the world, falls twice. »

“Are we learning to dive?” We don’t want that. It doesn’t look good for our sport. It’s frustrating at this level. »

Minnesota is winless in its last seven games, having also lost to the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday.

Evason wanted to make changes following the Wild’s 4-1 loss, which now sits at 5-10-4.

“I think frustration is turning into rage right now. I hope they are as mad as us (the staff), because we have to change things. This can’t continue. »

The Wild will host the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday.
