Colonel André Wüstner Warns of a ‘Dirty’ Peace in Ukraine: The Urgent Need for German Investment and Defense Preparedness

Colonel André Wüstner warns of a “dirty” peace in the Ukraine. He demanded more money from “Illner” in order to make the troops able to defend themselves – otherwise the turning point would “starve.”

Years of war – and in the end just a “dirty” peace? The panel of experts warned of this scenario on Thursday evening at “Maybrit Illner”. According to André Wüstner, Chairman of the German Armed Forces Association, it is all the more important that the federal government invests massively beyond the special fund. “I get a pulse there,” the colonel got going.

The guests

  • Lars Klingbeil, SPD party chairman
  • Roderich Kiesewetter (CDU), foreign politician
  • André Wüstner, Chairman of the German Armed Forces Association
  • Nicole Deitelhoff, peace researcher
  • Wolfgang Ischinger, Diplomat
  • Alica Jung, ZDF reporter

The reason for this was the rumored statement by Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) that the Bundeswehr is currently not capable of being defended. Other top military officers have confirmed this verdict, using terms such as “ready for a museum” or “palliative medicine,” said Wüstner. However, the message has still not reached many of those responsible in the government and Pistorius is being “fobbed off,” the colonel complained.

Will the turning point fail?

With a view to the national security strategy, Wüstner called for massive investments beyond the special fund. Otherwise the turning point will “starve”. Hundreds of billions of euros have been saved in the Bundeswehr over the past decades. That must be made up for, not only to protect Germany. “We are talking here regarding the future of Europe’s security architecture,” emphasized the colonel, suggesting the construction of an ammunition factory.

Wolfgang Ischinger, the former chairman of the Munich Security Conference and ex-ambassador to the United States, was the first to mention the term “dirty armistice” in the “Maybrit Illner” group. The Russian war of aggression will not necessarily end with a “nice peace treaty,” the diplomat predicted: “That’s more of an illusion.” More likely is a ceasefire that is violated on a daily basis – like following the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Switch to Ukraine: And then the lights went out

“We are now entering a brutal phase. The brutal pictures will become even more brutal,” warned Wüstner in view of the Ukrainian counter-offensive. “People are hit while they’re sleeping,” reported ZDF reporter Alica Jung, who was connected from a street in Zaporizhia, regarding increased attacks by the Russian army with drones and rockets. Shortly therefollowing, the streetlight behind her went out.

But Ukraine also wants to take the war to Russia. Pistorius recently said on “Illner” that it was “completely normal” for those attacked to advance into enemy territory in order to disrupt the supply, for example. As long as no civilians are attacked, you have to accept that: “It’s the most normal thing in the world.” But does Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) see such a use of German weapons just as calmly? the hostess wanted to know from SPD leader Lars Klingbeil.

Warning of German weapons in Russia

“I imagine the chancellor would sit on the television and say it’s perfectly okay for German weapons to suddenly attack areas in Russia,” the party chairman replied. He shares Pistorius’ analysis. Nevertheless, there is potential for escalation here and Scholz promised that Germany would not become a party to the war.

“Germany can do more,” criticized the peace researcher Nicole Deitelhoff, earning largely unanimous approval from the group. For the professor of international relations at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, this applies not only to the urgently needed deliveries of ammunition. In her view, the federal government has so far failed to prepare the German population for the real costs of the war.

According to Deitelhoff, large parts of the public are under the impression that the Ukraine will quickly reconquer lost areas with the counter-offensive – along the lines of “hold on a bit and Ukraine will be sovereign once more”. However, it is likely that the war will last for years, according to the researcher. Also, national security cannot be obtained “at no cost” as claimed in the new strategy. Deitelhoff expects “massive shifts” in the households. You have to adjust people to that.
