He systematically lured young boys into ambushes, raped them and brutally killed them. For this, the 66-year-old was sentenced to a symbolic record sentence of 1,835 years. But the jurisprudence would have made dismissal possible this year.
Bogota – He was called “La Bestia” (The Beast): Colombia’s worst serial killer, 66-year-old Luis Alfredo Garavito, is dead. Died as a result of several illnesses in a high-security prison in his homeland. Garavito was convicted in 2000 of raping, abusing and murdering at least 138 boys between the ages of eight and 16. For this he received a record sentence of 1,835 years in prison. But because he had helped solve the crimes, the sentence was later reduced to 22 years. Theoretically, he might have been released this year.

According to authorities, Garavito posed as a beggar, monk, sales representative or aid worker and preferred to hang around schools where he picked his victims. He lured the boys with gifts or cash to remote areas, where he raped and killed them. He often cut their throats with a knife.
His crimes remained undetected for a long time because he moved around the country and found more and more victims. In 1998, more than 40 murdered boys were discovered in the city of Pereira, who had only half-heartedly been buried in a plot of land. This was the first time that the police had initiated extensive investigations.
Garavito confessed to a total of 172 murders; he had kept records in a notebook. Nevertheless, only 138 crimes might be proven once morest him, and in these cases he was found guilty. He was subsequently sentenced to 1,853 years and nine days in prison, the longest sentence in Colombia’s history. However, under Colombian law, the prison sentence was limited to 40 years and was later reduced to 22 years.
The convicted serial killer said he suffered from lack of attention, physical abuse and sexual abuse in his childhood. A release on parole would have been possible in 2023, which was strongly rejected by many Colombians until the end. Garavito showed no real regret for his crimes until the end. (TT.com)
