Obtaining a visa gives individuals the opportunity to get to know a nation, enrich themselves with its culture, gastronomy and society, in addition to allowing them to collect memories and anecdotes of particular situations and experiences.

The United States, listed as one of the most touristic countries globally, currently requests a large number of citizens to present a visa so that they can enter its territory, even to make a connection at national airports. However, from Bogotá work has been done so that a possible visa exemption for Colombians who want to travel to the United States can become a reality.

Although the idea was initially the focus of skepticism, and in some cases ridicule, the Colombian embassy in the United States took the issue very seriously, so much so that progress on the issue might be announced over the next few weeks.

What would come to achieve the exemption

Both the ambassadors Luis Gilberto Murillo of Colombia and Francisco Palmieri of the United States have highlighted the work that each one has been carrying out to begin to glimpse the possibility that the visa exemption for Colombians will be a reality in the future.

Since one of Gustavo Petro’s initial statements on diplomatic matters, proposing the elimination of the visa for Colombian citizens, the foreign relations of the South American nation have taken a stronger course in terms of optimizing the power that the Colombian passport possesses abroad and one of the first victories might be that with only that document, entry into the United States is allowed.

The Petro government is determined to include Colombia in the Visa Waiver Program, whose visa waiver program gives certain citizens the opportunity to travel to the North American nation for tourism or business for a maximum of 90 days, presenting only their passport.

To date, only 40 countries are part of this program, where the only Latin American is Chile. The other countries that complete the list are: Germany, Andorra, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brunei, South Korea, Croatia, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Italy , Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Norway, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic.

What is known regarding the Visa Waiver Program

Although being part of the visa waiver program is not a guarantor to be able to enter the United States, it is a substantial advantage for the nations that are part of this group.

Both Ambassador Luis Gilberto Murillo and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Francisco Coy have organized meetings with United States authorities for the possible admission of Colombia to this program, whose talks will resume in the coming weeks, according to official sources.
