Colombian Vice President’s Father Emerges Unharmed from Attack

The father of Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez, Sigifredo Márquez Trujillo, escaped unharmed from an attack carried out this Sunday while he was traveling between the departments of Cauca and Valle del Cauca, in the southwest of the country, according to official sources.

The attack took place when Márquez Trujillo was traveling with a nephew of the vice president between the towns of Timba, in the troubled department of Cauca, and the hamlet of Robles, a rural area of Jamundí (Valle del Cauca).

“My heart hurts that on this very day, an attack was made against my father. I report that my father, along with my 6-year-old nephew and the two men who acted as security guards, suffered an attack on the Suárez-Cali highway, near Timba. Fortunately, they escaped the attack unharmed and are doing well,” said the vice president in a statement in which she referred to Father’s Day, which is celebrated today in Colombia.

For its part, the Military Forces Command said that “according to initial information, the vehicle in which (the official’s father) was traveling in the Timba sector was reportedly hit four times by gunfire. Fortunately, there were no regrettable consequences.”

Meanwhile, Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed solidarity with his vice president on his X account and asked authorities to open investigations into the case.

“I send my condolences to Vice President Francia Márquez for the attack on her father. I ask the authorities to begin the relevant investigations,” wrote the head of state.

Venezuelan Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez on Sunday condemned the attack on Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez’s father, Sigifredo Márquez Trujillo, who escaped unharmed from the attack while traveling between the departments of Cauca and Valle del Cauca (southwest).

“Venezuela condemns the cowardly attack against the father and family of Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez, to whom we extend our solidarity,” Rodríguez said on the social network X.

He also said that violence “will never be justified in a society that seeks peace.”
