(CNN Spanish)– The Colombian Attorney General’s Office reported this Wednesday in a statement that it is investigating the death of Lieutenant Colonel Óscar Dávila, one of those in charge of presidential security who had been peppered by the scandal over the alleged interceptions of telephone calls, who was found dead on 9 June and that -according to President Gustavo Petro- took his own life.
In its statement, the entity said that a team of prosecutors “carries out the pertinent activities to collect sufficient evidence and evidence to clarify with absolute certainty the cause and the manner in which the lieutenant colonel died.”
The Prosecutor’s Office added that next week “it will officially communicate the results of the investigation” and called for “responsible handling of information and to avoid the disclosure of unfounded speculation and versions that may violate rights or alter the development of the inquiries”.
Dávila Torres, one of those in charge of presidential security, had been found dead on Friday night. The lieutenant colonel was implicated in the scandal over the alleged illegal interceptions of the ex-nanny of the former chief of staff, Laura Sarabia.
The scandal of the alleged interceptions came to light on May 27 following a publication in Semana magazine. Sarabia’s former babysitter, Marelbys Meza, had told the outlet that in January she was taken to a Colombian Presidency building where, she says, she was subjected to an interrogation and a polygraph test for money that was stolen from the official’s apartment. The case led to the departure of the Government of Sarabia and the Colombian ambassador to Venezuela, Armando Benedetti.
