Colombian Guerrilla Group EMC-FARC Announces Suspension of Offensive Actions: Updates on Ceasefire Negotiations

The dissident guerrilla of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the EMC-FARC, announced on Friday the suspension of its “offensive actions” throughout Colombia, indicates a press release from this movement.

This announcement comes just hours after a car bomb attack against a police station, the second in 48 hours, which left around ten people injured in the very troubled department of Cauca (southwest), an area of influence of this FARC dissidence which rejects the peace agreement signed in 2016 with the Marxist guerrillas.

The EMC-FARC (for “central staff”) “offers the Colombian people, as an immediate means to reduce violence against civilian populations (…) the suspension of offensive actions throughout the national territory” against the army and the police, indicates a press release from this group, published through its usual communication networks.

The armed group “orders all its units to suspend its actions (…) from September 22”, until October 8, the date of the theoretical entry into force of the ceasefire agreed with the government.

According to the dissent, “there is a large-scale military plan of the Ministry of Defense, directed against our command, against which offensive and defensive actions have been carried out against the public force.”

On Wednesday, a car bomb attack targeted another police station in Timba, a neighboring town in the same department of Cauca, killing two civilians.

The EMC-FARC is engaged in talks with the government and negotiations are expected to begin on October 8 along with a bilateral ceasefire.

Recent months have been marked by a resurgence of activities by this group against the security forces and in an attempt to increase its territorial influence.
